TITLE: Food Service Director

REPORTS TO: Director of Finance

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full time/Year Round

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

SUPERVISES Cafeteria lead positions and staff

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Two- or four-year degree in business or food service management. Four-year degree preferred
  2. Certification as required by the Department of Education, Food Service of Michigan
  3. At least (3) years of experience in food service operations, including meal planning and preparation.
  4. Valid Michigan Driver’s license
  5. Demonstrates a sincere desire to aid all students
  6. Good health, high moral character, and good attendance record
  7. Experience managing and supervising kitchen staff preferred
  8. Should be willing to complete continuing education requirements relevant to performing job responsibilities prescribed for the Director of Food Service

JOB GOAL: To ensure that nutritious food is attractively served to the students in the district in accordance with the rules established by the U.S.D.A. for the National School Lunch Program and the Michigan Department of Education regulations. This position is responsible for the operation of school breakfast, lunch, snack programs, fresh fruit and vegetable programs, and summer programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ability to learn, understand, and follow applicable State and Federal regulations and guidelines pertaining to food service safety.
  2. Be computer literate.
  3. Able to read and process government regulations and codes.
  4. Able to follow directions, policies, and procedures.
  5. Familiar with State of Michigan grants and the granting process.
  6. Ability to manage budgets exceeding $100k and ensure the use of State of Michigan public education accounting principles.
  7. Pass a criminal background check.
  8. Excellent communication skills with staff, admin, parents, and the school board.
  9. Meet with families of students with special needs or medical conditions that require alternative meals and maintain those records.
  10. Has a vision for the food service program and can communicate and lead that vision for continuous improvement.
  11. Implement employee safety regulations.
  12. Inform and enforce procedures to ensure food is prepared in a sanitary and safe environment.
  13. Establish financial goals with the Director of Finance.
  14. Plan for community involvement and partnerships
  15. Determine equipment needs.
  16. Establish standards for receiving, storing and inventorying food and non-food supplies.
  17. Order food and non-food supplies.
  18. Scan student count at checkout or verify compliance for counts.
  19. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws and policies.
  20. Send monthly reports to the Director of Finance.
  21. Verify applications, keep on file, and update as needed. File reports as needed.
  22. Participate in on-site reviews as needed.
  23. Update and process Direct Certifications and Applications in student database.
  24. Fill staff roles for those who call in sick or need time off.
  25. Contact point for calls from employees.
  26. Prepare task lists for employees as needed.
  27. Update and ensure the accuracy of production records for all service locations.
  28. Evaluate staff
  29. Make recommendations for hires and/or terminations.
  30. Performs such other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the administration or the school board

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT :

12-month work year. Workdays, salary increases, and benefits are established in accordance with the provisions as set forth by the Iron Mountain Public Schools Board of Education. Initial salary shall be determined by the Board of School Directors and will be commensurate with experience.

EVALUATION:

Performance of the job will be evaluated at least annually.
